The company was established in 1929 as Inter-Island Airways Company by George R. Pasha who wanted to provide service between Hawai'i and the U.S. mainland. The company was renamed Hawaiian Airlines in 1941 after it began service with a single airplane named "Hawaiian Rose" which had been built by TWA for the airline's founder's wife's family.
