Stevenson’s Academy of Hair Design is under the ownership of Mrs. Dorothy Mitchell Stevenson, her daughter, Josulyn M. Williams and son-in-law, James R. Williams. The Academy’s first location was opened in February 1973 in the downtown area of New Orleans, LA by Mrs. Stevenson. Her dream was to be instrumental in the growth and personal development of her students. She believed cosmetology could be a vehicle to improve the quality of life for her students and their families. What other profession grants access to a billion- dollar industry after a year or less of training? As an African American woman in the 1970s, her entrepreneurial aspirations meant adversity, but today her dream is a reality. In March 1985, her dream expanded with the opening of the second school on the Westbank of New Orleans in Historic Algiers Point.
